On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Opera announced that it had begun plans for a new production of Wagner's grandiose Ring Cycle, its first new production of the four-opera epic in nearly two decades. The production will be directed by Yuval Sharon, one of the world's fastest-rising theater directors, and conducted by Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who recently extended his contract through 2030. The run is set to feature the extraordinary soprano Lise Davidsen, a specialist in German opera, as Brünnhilde.
Met General Manager Peter Gelb said, “Every music director of a major opera company expects and deserves to have a Ring Cycle. It’s the crowning achievement, the biggest thing you can do in opera.”
The production, while still in development, seeks to present the Ring Cycle in a manner that highlights its universal appeal, rather than confine it to a particular location or time. Audiences will get a taste of Sharon's direction style in the 2025-26 season when he is scheduled to stage a new production of another Wagner masterpiece, Tristan und Isolde, also with Davidsen.
